Advanced Video Attribute Terminal Assembler and Recreator: is a system of escape sequences occasionally used on Bulletin Board Systems (BBSes). May also refer to: the graphical representation of a user. (Contributors, AVATAR, 2008) |
Affective Computing: “An attempt to develop machines that can sense emotions of the people with whom they are interacting, and then respond accordingly.” (Norman, 2004, p. 184) |
Affordance: Attribute of an object that allows people to know how to use it, i.e. scroll bars move up and down. (Preece, 2008, p.25) |

Behavioral Level -Design: “is about use, about experience with a product…..,function, performance, and usability.” (Norman, 2004, p.37) |
CSCW
Computer-Supported Cooperative Work: CSCW [is] a generic term, which combines the understanding of the way people work in groups with the enabling technologies of computer networking, and associated hardware, software, services and techniques. ( Contributors, CSCW, 2008) |
Deadlock: “Nothing can be done because each machine is waiting for the next, and the final machine is waiting for the first.” Similar to your computer freezing. (Norman, 2004, p.182) |
Dramaturgists: Dramaturgy can also be defined, more broadly, as shaping a story or like elements into a form that can be acted. Dramaturgy gives the work or the performance a structure. More than actual writing, a dramaturges work can often be defined as designing. (Preece, 2008) |
Hard Technology
The physical stuff, such as nuclear power plants, electronic components and so forth.” (Vicente, 2003, p.20) |
Invisible Hands
Vicente defines Invisible hands “is a prototypical example of an emergent property- you can’t touch it or hold it, but it exerts an enormous influence on the overall behaviour of the system.” ie: creating a shopping space which lures people in to spend more money (having the sale racks at the back of the store), or the Ministry of Environment- to serve as the benevolent “invisible hand” that protects the public interest, particularly when the cost of failure in a technological system is lethal( referring to Walkerton tragedy) (Vicente, 2003, pgs. 49, 110, 263) |
GUI
Graphical User Interfaces: pronounced goo-ee (Preece, 2008, p.7) is a type of user interface which allows people to interact with electronic devices like computers, hand-held devices (MP3 Players, Portable Media Players, Gaming devices), household appliances and office equipment. A GUI offers graphical icons, and visual indicators as opposed to text-based interfaces, typed command labels or text navigation to fully represent the information and actions available to a user. The actions are usually performed through direct manipulation of the graphical elements. [1] (Contributors, User Interface, 2008)

Informatics is the science of information, the practice of information processing, and the engineering of information systems. Informatics studies the structure, algorithms, behavior, and interactions of natural and artificial systems that store, process, access and communicate information. It also develops its own conceptual and theoretical foundations and utilizes foundations developed in other fields. Since the advent of computers, individuals and organizations increasingly process information digitally. This has led to the study of informatics that has computational, cognitive and social aspects, including study of the social impact of information technologies. (Contributors, Informatics, 2008) |
Information Visualization the interdisciplinary study of the visual representation of large-scale collections of non-numerical information, such as files and lines of code in software systems[1], and the use of graphical techniques to help people understand and analyze data.[2] ( Contributors, Information Visualization, 2008) |
Mapping: refers to the relationship between controls and their effects in the world. The way buttons, knobs, controllers are mapped out so their instinctive to use, like a flashlight or a CD player. (Preece, 2008, p.23) |
Mechanistic Thinking- easy to remember –easy to use controls –that reduce accidents (Vicente, 2003, p.76 & 141) |
(Brown,2007) |
Multi-media: text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity content forms ( Contributors, Multimedia, 2008) |
(Wathieu,2008) |
Radio-Frequency Identification Tags: An RFID tag is an object that can be applied to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification and tracking using radio waves. |
Soft Technology “ “Softer “ elements such as work schedules, information, team responsibilities, staffing and even legal regulations” ( Vicente, 2003, p. 20) |
“Visceral Level Design: Is about the initial impact of a product, about its appearance, touch, and feel.” (Norman, 2004, p.37) |
Visual Display Unit (What is Interaction Design, pg 7) Allows the user to see and perhaps interact with information. Used in billboards, future Taxi Cabs, Iphones, Television screens, etc…. (Preece, 2008, p.7) |
